Why is exercise important for health?

Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining optimal health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Some benefits of exercise include:

  • Improved Cardiovascular Health: Exercise helps strengthen the heart and improve circulation, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • Increased Muscle Strength and Endurance: Regular strength training exercises can help build muscle mass, improve bone density, and enhance overall physical performance.
  • Enhanced Mental Health: Physical activity releases endorphins, neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Weight Management: Exercise helps burn calories and maintain a healthy weight, reducing the risk of obesity and related conditions like diabetes.
  • Improved Immune Function: Regular moderate-intensity exercise has been shown to boost the immune system, reducing the risk of infections and chronic diseases.

The Need for Exercise in Greater Manchester and the UK

In the Greater Manchester area and across the UK, there is a pressing need for increased physical activity. According to recent statistics, a significant portion of the population leads sedentary lifestyles, contributing to various health issues. For example:

  • In the UK, 1 in 4 adults is classified as physically inactive, engaging in less than 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.
  • Greater Manchester has higher rates of physical inactivity compared to the national average, with around 32% of adults failing to meet recommended activity levels.
  • Sedentary behaviour is particularly prevalent among women, especially those from BME backgrounds, carers, and housewives. This lack of physical activity can have detrimental effects on their health, including an increased risk of obesity, heart disease, and mental health issues.

Addressing the Challenges: Initiatives During COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when lockdown measures were in place, we recognised the importance of maintaining physical activity levels despite the restrictions. In response, we launched various initiatives in health and well-being, including:

  • Online Exercise Classes: Virtual sessions provided individuals with the opportunity to stay active and engaged from the safety of their homes.
  • At Home Workout Plans: We developed tailored workout plans and resources to help individuals maintain their fitness routines while adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Continuing Our Commitment

As we move forward, we remain dedicated to promoting physical activity and improving the health and well-being of individuals in our community. Through our exercise classes, we aim to empower individuals to lead active and healthy lifestyles, regardless of their age, background, or fitness level. By providing accessible and inclusive exercise opportunities, we strive to make a positive impact on the health and happiness of our community members.
